Teen Activities Added to Ypsilanti Heritage Festival

Tenth Annual Noise Permit concert will take place in Frog Island Park

Teens will have a place of their own at this year’s Ypsilanti Heritage Festival, thanks to a partnership between Ozone House and the Ypsilanti District Library. The groups will host activities for teens on Saturday, August 22 starting at 2pm and culminating in the tenth annual “Noise Permit” teen concert from 5-7pm.

Plans for the annual concert had been in question since the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival chose not to allow unaccompanied minors into the main part of the festival this year, but Ozone House and the Ypsilanti District Library worked closely with the festival and the City of Ypsilanti to host the event adjacent to the main festival in Frog Island Park. The groups sought sponsorships from local organizations to pay the additional cost of renting the park and Ypsilanti Running Company, which recently adopted Frog Island Park, agreed to sponsor the event.

“Teens need an opportunity to engage with the festival in a positive way, and we are glad to be able to provide it,” said Jodi Krahnke, head of Youth Services at the Ypsilanti District Library. She added that in years past the library had held a separate concert, but that combining the events was an important way to support Ozone House’s efforts.

Local teens are working together to plan the concert as well as the teen activities that will be offered during the day from 1-5 pm. Activity booths will include a drumming group, a break dancing class, and temporary henna tattoos. Teens will also be able to experiment with new music technologies, led by interns from the library who just completed a 10-week music technology internship program sponsored by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Krahnke explained, “Our teen interns have been working all summer on learning music technology, including sound recording and using Makey Makeys to create their own digital instruments. This fall they will be teaching other teens how to do these projects, so the festival is a great opportunity to show off what they have learned.”

The Noise Permit concert, starting at 5pm, will feature music and spoken word performances by local youth ages 13-20. Open Auditions will be held on August 13, from 5-7pm at the downtown library. Youth may also contact the Ypsilanti District Library (734-482-4110 x1322) or Ozone House (734-485-2222) to sign up for an individual audition.

“We have been hosting this concert for 10 years in a row, and it has always been a great experience for our teens” said Colleen O’Brien of Ypsilanti’s Ozone House drop-in center. “Every year it takes new partnerships to make it happen, and we are glad to see our community come together again this year to make sure there is a place for teens at the Heritage Festival.”

Noise Permit 2015 is sponsored by Ozone House, the Ypsilanti District Library, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, the Ypsilanti Running Company, and the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival.
