TEDxYDL Speakers Announced

Ten speakers will take the stage at TEDxYDL, presenting some of our community’s next big ideas in compelling 8-minute talks. TEDxYDL is organized by the Ypsilanti District Library and will take place at Halle Library on Eastern Michigan University’s campus. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 22 from 7-9pm, and will feature nine 8-minute talks by local speakers as well as videos of selected TED talks.

The speakers represent a diverse array of disciplines, interests, and organizations across Washtenaw County. Though the talk topics will differ greatly, they will all address the theme, “Connect. Create. Change.” Each talk will highlight a way that connecting unexpected people, groups, or ideas can change our lives, our community, and the world.

A complete list of speakers and their bios is available at http://www.tedxydl.com/2016speakers/. Speakers will include:

·         Derrick Jackson, Community Engagement Coordinator at the Washtenaw County Sherriff’s Office, who will also emcee the event.

·         Susan Santone, Director at Creative Change Solutions

·         La’Ron Williams, professional storyteller

·         D. Scott Heister and Diana Bernal-Canseco, a teacher and student at the Ypsilanti Community schools who will present jointly

·         Michael Beasley, User Experience Designer at ITHAKA

·         Sahithya Reddivari, PhD student in Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan

·         John Barrie, the Executive Director of the Appropriate Technology Collaborative

·         Erin Howarth, Director of Wilderness Adventure Books

·         Keith P. Jason, Coordinator of Student Services at the EMU College of Technology

Eastern Michigan University has hosted two TEDx events in years past, but this event will be the first to focus on the Ypsilanti community. The partnership between the two libraries will help bridge the gap between the city and the university. TEDxYDL will also partner with the Tower Inn of Ypsilanti, which is sponsoring the after party where participants and speakers can connect following the event.

“Throughout history, libraries have been places where people come to gain access to the accumulated knowledge of humankind and to share and build upon their own great ideas. The partnership between the two libraries in our community around this event just made sense,” said Paula Drummond, Head of Adult Services at the Ypsilanti District Library.

Tickets to TEDxYDL are available for free, but advance registration is required and seating is limited. Those wishing to attend the event may register at www.TEDxYDL.com.

About the Ypsilanti District Library

As a community resource, the Ypsilanti District Library's mission is to enrich life, stimulate intellectual curiosity, foster literacy, and encourage an informed citizenry.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today's leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED's annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a "wish," or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
