Gnomon : a novel

This dystopian novel will confuse and astonish you; at times you will hate it but keep picking it back up, driven to finish.  The all-knowing, all-powerful System does not make mistakes, until it does.

A dissident, Diana Hunter, dies during an interrogation.  Inspector Mielikki Neith is assigned to the case.  Using the surveillance system Witness, Neith has access to deceased Hunter’s thoughts (neural recordings) and can relive her experiences.  Once inside Hunter’s world, the story divides into four plot lines with a common narrative theme, and Neith can also go through these experiences , picking up clues as to what Hunter’s interrogators were trying to discover.

Fans of William Gibson  will love this strange, huge, baffling detective story by the son of John Le Carré. It certainly was one of the more bizarre books I have read.

Gnomon : a novelBy Harkaway, Nick, 1972- author.

“In the world of Gnomon, citizens are constantly observed and democracy has reached a pinnacle of ‘transparency.’ Every action is seen, every word is recorded, and the System has access to its citizens’ thoughts and memories—all in the name of providing the safest society in history.”
