Get Inspired! Fundraiser at YDL

Friday, April 5, 2013

YDL is proud to present our Get Inspired! fundraiser: an evening of jazz!

Join us on Friday, April 12 at 7p as the YDL-Whittaker community room is transformed into a lively jazz club. Guests will enjoy jazz musicians’ portraits on the walls, the RJ Spangler Trio and legendary saxophonist Larry Smith playing up-close and personal, host Linda Yohn from WEMU 89.1, the Eastern Michigan University Jazz Combo, and great food generously donated by the Red Rock Downtown Barbecue

YDL is hosting this fundraiser to support the arts and cultural programs the library offers throughout the year. A $40 ticket opens the door to the artful images in The Fine Art of Jazz exhibit by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Dan White.  His 50 black-and-white pictures showcase the impact Kansas City jazz musicians and vocalists had on the national jazz movement of the 1920s and 1930s through photographs of and commentary on renowned jazz musicians who started in Kansas City. These artists grew from there to have great impact on American jazz as we know it today. Many of them are still performing and remain a powerful influence on the jazz genre.

Jazz music will enliven the event, first from EMU’s Jazz Combo and then from local Detroit jazz scene musicians of the RJ Spangler Trio with special guest alto saxophonist Larry Smith.  Smith specializes in ballads, although he also loves bebop and the blues. RJ Spangler and Smith are performing courtesy of the Jazz Foundation of America.

YDL is most fortunate to be joining forces once again with local jazz treasure, Linda Yohn, radio host and music director with WEMU 89.1.  Her knowledge of all things jazz and blues is widely known and appreciated.  Viewing the exhibit with Linda will be memorable.

The evening includes a Wine Pull. How often do you get the chance to pay $10 for a bottle of wine worth three or four times that? For a $10 donation, guests will have the opportunity to choose from anonymously wrapped bottles of wine valued at $10 and up. These bottles of wine have been generously donated by fans and friends of the YDL, and all proceeds go to support YDL arts and cultural programs throughout the year. At the end of the evening, there will be a drawing for a copy of the book Kansas City Jazz: From Ragtime to BeBop – A History which was co-authored by Chuck Haddix, who provided commentary for The Fine Art of Jazz exhibit.

If you are a jazz lover or a YDL champion, you won’t want to miss this stellar evening of entertainment, great food, and wonderful people. Tickets may be obtained at any YDL location and online via

“The Fine Art of Jazz” exhibition is organized and toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance and The National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition’s appearance at YDL is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Ypsilanti District Library.
